Why is it so difficult to find employees?

If you’re a business owner and have been struggling to find talent for your business lately, you’re not alone. You have to have been living under a rock to have not heard of the Great Resignation that is plaguing businesses overseas, although we won’t blame you if you’ve been too busy with internal matters.

COVID-19 has stirred change in us all, whether we were willing for it or not and no one has come out of the past two years unscathed.

We decided to address some of the factors that may be contributing to why you are finding it so hard to find employees, even though unemployment rates in Australia are at an all time low.

A preference to work from home

It is not so much about a lack of talent available out there, although for some sectors that may be another hurdle to overcome. It is more about the cultural shifts and economic disruptions that are playing a part in changing the way that workers are wanting to work.

It could be that the talent you are looking for has left the big cities in droves, finding lockdown a wake up call to improving their work life balances.

More and more professionals are hoping to attract a position that enables them to work from home, at least some of the time.

Mental wellbeing

Hustle culture, where it is cool to work tirelessly and endlessly, is a thing of the past. Emotional wellbeing and health is a central focus of many individuals and unless your business has developed a culture that supports this, you may find yourself with fewer CVs adorning your desk.

This is not simply a post-pandemic revolution. Millennials and Gen Zs, who make up the bulk of the workforce now, are more inclined to be keenly aware of their wellbeing and to vocalize their concerns, rather than to prioritize economic gain.

There has been a shift in power from employer to employee as a result of the mentality of the majority. Unless you as a business owner are willing to consider how you are able to retain your current employees and attract new ones, then you could find yourself at the mercy of this Great Resignation.

Listen, be compassionate, focus on wellbeing and adapt where you can to make your working culture and environment more receptive to the needs of your employees, and you’ll find yourself with a team of positive professionals who take your company to new strengths.
